The island of Hawai‘i offers the most dramatic scenery of all the islands and while it’s known for its size and volume, the BIG Island, as most know it, holds some of the best cycling in the world. And as this tour offers, the “hardest climb” in the world, Mauna Kea. At nearly 14,000 ft, it’s also known as the tallest mountain in the world when measured from the ocean floor.
Be prepared to be treated like Ali’i on this tour of the Big Island (Hawaii).
Rolling directly from the hotel, we are greeted with magical views of the Kohala mountains as we head north along the middle portion of the infamous Ironman World Championship course and up to the turn around point at Hawi town. We’ll grab a coffee or ice cream at Kohala coffee mill and then head out to the end of the road. This next 10 miles is classic Hawaii riding with some great little climbs and magnificent views of the Hamakua Coast. We have a great little climb up Kohala Mountain for first KOM of the tour. While the top of this climb can be a little windy at times, the view and descent are amazing as we go directly back to the Mauna Kea.
Post Ride Activities: Golf, Beach, SUP, Canoe Paddle, Pool time, or Chart a Dive

Hawai‘i grows some of the best vanilla in the world, and on this invigorating ride you’ll work to enjoy it! After a mostly downhill cruise to Honoka’a we’ll challenge ourselves with the steep climb to Pa’auilo, up tranquil roads lined with groves of coffee and fruit trees. Our sweet finish is at 1,800 feet, where we’ll treat ourselves with a farm-to-table vanilla milkshake from The Hawaiian Vanilla Company. After our treat, we descend back down and head out to the Valley of the Kings (Waipio Valley) Lookout, our final destination. After soaking in the incredible view, we load up and transfer back to Waimea. Note: the climb up to Waimea is optional.
Post Ride Activities: Golf and sunset paddle

Mauna Loa, at 13,640 feet, is often eclipsed by it’s the famous neighbor, Mauna Kea, but trust us, this is byfar a better ride. Mauna Loa is the largest mountain in the world (by volume) and offers 11,200 feet ofclimbing to its solar observatory. The raw beauty of the lava flows that have persisted over the past 100years and that surround this climb reinforce how this active volcano continues to add land to the BigIsland, earning its name Mauna Loa, or Long Mountain. This climb is one of our favorites, with very little traffic (in fact you can count the cars on one hand usually) and breathtaking views from above the clouds. The climb undulates quite a bit, which makes some of the 15% grades a little easier to manage, but at 10,000 feet, the pesky altitude is always a reminder of our limitations

This ride takes us to the Southern most point in the United States, Ka Lae (South Point), where your reward for this long day is a 20ft cliff jump after the long haul. The ride is rolling terrain with a decent climb out of Kona being our only real test for the day. As you ride south, try to pick out all the different fruit and vegetable trees you can spot. The tranquility and charm of South Point gives our guests a completely different perspective and experience of Hawaii than most visitors will ever know. As we head south, we ride through multiple lava flows and climate zones, highlighting the unique and diverse ecology of the youngest of all islands, Hawaii.

Perhaps the most serene, scenic ride on the Big Island of Hawaii, aptly finishes at the Buddhist temple in Wood Valley. We’ll grab a sweet treat at Punalu’u bakery, the southern-most bakery in the U.S., and then roll out on old cane haul roads that meander above the coast. After ascending through Naʻālehu we’ll begin a steep climb up quiet country roads past small farms and ranches. Keep an eye out for ‘Io, native Hawaiian hawks, as we cut across the mountain region of Enuhue and then descend into the town of Pahala. From here, we’ll climb up to Wood Valley where we’ll visit the Buddhist temple and refuel at the historic Ka’u Coffee Mill, rated one of the top ten coffee roasters in the world. It’s all downhill from Wood Valley to the Black Sand Beach of Punalu’u, where we’ll refresh our legs with a swim and some local snacks. Want more miles? Return along the ocean, where the rugged coastline creates a dramatic backdrop for your climb back up to Naʻālehu.
